Two drown in Wayanad

Death toll rises to 12 in district

Wayanad: Two persons were drowned in Wayanad on Wednesday taking monsoon-related death toll in the district to 12.

The deceased were identified as N. Sivan, 48, and Latif, 43. Sivan drowned in a canal swollen with flood waters in Mananthavady taluk. Latif fell into the flooded Mananthavady puzha.

There was a marked decline in rainfall in Wayanad district on Wednesday. In the 24 hours, till 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday, only 37.6 mm rainfall was recorded.

Rainfall during the 24 hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday was 111 mm. This was said to be the highest in the past 11 years.

Nearly 6,500 persons belonging to 1,514 families were in 77 relief camps opened by the district administration.

Reports reaching Kalpetta, the district headquarters, spoke of 60 houses being destroyed and another 645 houses getting partially damaged in the rain.

As flood waters receded, vehicular traffic between Wayanad and Kozhikode resumed on Wednesday though vehicles had to deviate from the highway to avoid waterlogged stretches.

Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran and Forest Minister Benoy Viswom reached Wayanad. The Ministers reached the place by a helicopter and visited a flood relief camp at Meenangady. Free ration is being given to tribal people in Wayanad till Onam.
