SALEM: Representatives of local bodies should co-ordinate with the district administration in its efforts to execute development works, which the government has been undertaking, said Collector N. Mathivanan.

After distributing welfare measures worth Rs. 46.70 lakh to the beneficiaries at Masinaickenpatti village near here on Wednesday, the Collector said that without the cooperation of the people’s representatives, the schemes of the government could not reach the poor and needy. He said that all the village panchayats should strive hard to achieve total sanitation with stress on individual toilets. Then only all the village panchayats could win the Union Government’s Nirmal Puskar award. Only five village panchatas had won the award in the district, he pointed out.

Mr. Mathivanan added that people should work hard to eliminate child labour. The government had been distributing free colour TVs to the poor. So far the district had received 65,522 TV sets and they had been distributed. Family cards had been distributed without any partiality. The administration was also ready to disburse loans to the self-help groups, he added.

Those who attended the function included Project Officer, DRDA, D. Jegannathan, Mahalitr Thittam Project Officer P.R.K. Ramesh, PA to Collector (Agri) K. Subramanian, Vazhapadi Tahsildar P. Sivathanapillai and others. Local body representatives also participated in the function.
