The election was perceived as an acid test for the Government
PANAJI: Congress MLA Mauvin Godinho (47) was elected Deputy Speaker of the State Assembly on Tuesday, the second day of the monsoon session, by a voice vote. For the Congress-led coalition Government led by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat, the election was perceived as an acid test owing to continued squabbles among a number of disgruntled MLAs within the coalition over positions of power, including Ministerial berths. Defeated
Earlier, a motion seeking to elect as Deputy Speaker an Opposition candidate Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco, belonging to Save Goa Front, a regional outfit, was defeated by 17 votes to 22 in the 40 member House. The Congress-led alliance has the strength of 23, including the Speaker. Redundant
With the election of Mr. Godinho with a voice vote, the third motion proposing the candidature of Ramesh Tawadkar of the BJP became redundant. The candidature of Mr. Godinho, who has been elected from Cortalim constituency of south Goa, was proposed by the Chief Minister and seconded by Home Minister Ravi Naik (both Congress). Mr. Godinho is a former Minister and also former Youth Congress president.
