CHIKMAGALUR: The police have arrested an alleged rapist-murderer with the help of the mobile phone of the victim. Vyjayanti, a first division assistant in the office of the Block Education Officer in Kadur, was returning to Chikmagalur from Bijapur in a bus. She alighted from the bus in Kadur in the early hours of June 18 as she had to change buses. She was forced to get down near the forest check post as the bus did not go to the bus stand. Mohammad, a resident of Birur, is said to have come in a multi-utility vehicle and offered a lift to Chikmagalur, which she accepted. He then stopped the vehicle near Sakrepatna and allegedly raped and murdered her. According to the police, the accused confessed to have disposed off the body on the Charmadi Ghat road after relieving her of Rs. 9,000, gold ornaments and the mobile phone. Complaint
The police, who registered a missing person complaint lodged by the victim’s sister, were able to ascertain that the stolen mobile phone was still being used. They traced it to Haneef, a resident of Mudigere, who revealed during interrogation that he had bought it from the accused. The police have arrested Mohammad and registered a case.
