Assembly passes APMC Bill

BANGALORE: The Legislative Assembly on Tuesday passed the Karnataka Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2007, which would allow the private players to enter the agricultural market in a big way.

The Bill amends the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) Act, 1966. It aims at allowing the private sector to buy or sell notified agricultural commodities either directly or through agents, not only from APMCs, but also from one or more private sector market yards or farmer-consumer market yards.

To implement the recommendations of the Union Government’s Model Act, 2003, which aims at uniformity in development, reformation in regulation of marketing agricultural produce, the Act of 1966 was amended. It aims to bring a turnaround in the farm sector in the State. As many as 19 States have passed laws so far, Minister for Agricultural Marketing Sharanabasappa Darshanapur said.
