THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The coastal areas of the State will soon have an information technology-based network providing a variety of information to fishermen, Fisheries Minister S. Sarma told the Assembly on Wednesday. Replying to the debate on the demand for grants for Fisheries, the Minister said that information centres would be set up along the coastal areas. There would also be elaborate arrangements for early warnings on weather conditions and disaster management. Satellite-based systems that monitor fish movement and communicate the information to the fishermen would also be made available. Mr. Sarma recalled that about 17,000 families of fishermen were proposed to be rehabilitated in new houses under the tsunami rehabilitation scheme. The Planning Commission had approved projects costing Rs.331 crore for this.Registration had been made mandatory for boats by the end of this month. A one-time fee of Rs.1,500 would be payable for registration. Payment of contributions to the fishermen’s welfare fund by boat owners could be allowed to be made in three instalments, if needed. The House later passed the demand for grants amounting to Rs.75.56 crore.
