Lokayukta issues directive to legislators

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde has asked 267 legislators to file details of assets and liabilities for 2006 in the required format by July 25 or face criminal proceedings.

Reiterating that it was a mandatory duty under Section 22 of the Karnataka Lokayukta Act, Mr. Hegde told The Hindu that although the 267 legislators had given details of their assets they had not done so in the requisite format.

“Not using the format amounts to non-filing of statement. It is a mandatory duty and failure to do so will amount to committing an offence under Section 176 of Indian Penal Code,” he said. Earlier in a press note, Lokayukta Registrar L. Subramanya said on Tuesday that individual notices had been sent on July 12 to all MLAs and MLCs who had not given complete information.

The list of the 267 legislators has been sent to the Secretaries of the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council.
