Guruprasad’s dream run ends in title win

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: D. Guruprasad’s dream run culminated in a well-deserved title triumph in the Narsamma memorial State-ranking badminton championships at the Malleswaram Association courts here on Wednesday.

Guruprasad, who was forced to play in the qualifying rounds due to lack of adequate points, showed his class when he registered a comeback-win over the second-seeded Mohit Kumar 16-21, 21-16, 21-19 in the men’s singles final.

Mohit, who was plagued by back pain, began well, taking the first game against his tentative rival. But in the second game, he gave away lot of negative points, allowing Guruprasad to claw back and win the second game. He was in full flow in the hard-fought decider and Mohit Kumar, after being tied at 15-all, lost the momentum as he struggled to keep pace with his rival.

Jacqueline Kunnath claimed the girls’ under-16 singles title with a 21-16, 21-16 win over Anagha Unni. It was a happy ending for Anisha Karumbaiah, who made her second successive girls’ under-13 singles final in as many weeks. Anisha defeated Reshma Karthik 13-21, 21-17, 21-10 to bag the title.
