MUMBAI: A TADA special court here on Wednesday awarded death sentence to three persons in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case. Parvez Nazeer Ahmed Shaikh, Mushtaq Tarani and Abdul Ghani Turk had been charged with planting bombs in vehicles and hotels on March 12, 1993. Another accused S.N. Thapa, whom the court wanted to be present for announcing his sentence, did not come for the second consecutive day on medical grounds. Special Judge P.D. Kode held Shaikh (39) guilty under Sections 302 (murder) and 120-b (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 3(2)(i) (terrorist act resulting in death) of the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act and pronounced the death penalty on all three counts. He was also given varying sentences for offences under the Explosive Substances Act, the Explosives Act, the IPC and the TADA Act, and asked to pay a fine of Rs.5,25,000. The court said Shaikh was deeply involved in the conspiracy and was closely associated with the main accused, Tiger Memon. He participated in landing RDX, filling RDX in vehicles and planting an explosive-laden scooter at the Katha Bazaar in south Mumbai. He left an RDX-filled suitcase in the Sea Rock Hotel at Bandra. The scooter explosion caused four deaths and injuries to several others. In the suitcase explosion in a hotel room, property worth Rs. 9 crore was damaged. Shaikh did not say anything and walked out quietly, escorted by the police.
