CHENNAI: It’s no longer just nursing or computer studies that the Corporation Community College in Triplicane will offer. Starting this August, students can look forward to learning how to deal with callers from different countries and, if lucky, get a job with a business process outsourcing (BPO) firm. In a bid to revamp the courses offered in the community college, the Chennai Corporation, in collaboration with Dr. Reddy’s Foundation, is planning to offer three new courses – in connection with business process outsourcing, hospitality services, and customer relations and sales. Each student will be charged Rs.500 and trained for three months by facilitators from the Dr. Reddy’s Foundation. Life skills will also be offered as part of the course. The course will include a field visit to several companies, R. Shanmugasundaram, zonal coordinator of Dr. Reddy’s Foundation, said. Mr. Shanmugasundaram added that at the end of the course students who had taken up the course would be trained in interview skills, work place requirements and communicative English. The courses being offered at present were not yielding the desired results in terms of quantity of employment. In order to get in tune with industry requirements, the Corporation was offering new courses, tying up for the first time with a foundation, a Corporation official said. The courses were going to be started as an experiment in one college by enrolling 40 students in each course. At the end of the year all the students who complete the courses will hopefully gain employment, the official added.
