NEW DELHI: Doctors belonging to the reserved category at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences started a relay hunger strike here on Wednesday, claiming that they were manhandled at the behest of the AIIMS director while protesting against alleged discrimination in appointment of senior residents at the Institute. The AIIMS administration had issued temporary appointment letters to selected candidates earlier this week. Kapil Yadav of AIIMS said: “The administration has used the selection process to weed out reserved category candidates. As many as 74 reserved candidates cleared the written examination, of which only 24 were finally selected after subjective assessment. This number is against the minimum of 53 posts reserved as per the government policy.” ‘Rules flouted’
Dr. Yadav said the Institute director issued interim letter of appointments on July 16 to all the candidates originally selected by him in defiance of all rules and regulations. “None of the aggrieved reserved category residents, including those trained at AIIMS and who qualified the written examination, were considered competent enough by him to be given these interim appointments,” he added. The doctors on protest are demanding among other things that the director meet the doctors from the reserved category and that all candidates who have qualified the written tests be given their posts as per their marks.
