Rain: many families still in relief camps

Slight let-up in rain; roads damaged


21 relief camps continue to function

443 members from 106 families are in these camps


KOCHI: Though there was an apparent let-up in the rain on Wednesday, 21 relief camps continued to function in the district housing 370 families.

Nine camps were functioning in Aluva taluk, six in Parakkadavu village and one each in Nedumbassery, Chengamanad and Aluva west villages.

There were 443 members from 106 families in these camps, a senior taluk official said.

The water level in Periyar receded compared to Tuesday, he said. Roads were severely hit. Some roads were completely washed away.

Seven houses were destroyed and 230 houses damaged, the official said. The District Collector said at least half of the relief amount would be paid immediately in the case of destroyed houses.

In Paravur taluk, 12 relief camps were functioning and about 1,000 persons from 217 families were housed in these camps.

Six camps were functioning in Kunnukara village, three in Puthenvelikara village and one each in Kadungalloor, Eloor and Alangad villages.

In Kochi taluk, 39 houses suffered damage.

The relief camp at Muvattupuzha was closed on Wednesday evening following the let-up in the rain. Two houses suffered damage. The water level in the Muvattupuzha River was also falling, a taluk official said. In Kunnathunadu taluk, 13 houses suffered damage in the last two days.
