FOR A GREEN CITY: Seedlings being watered at the forest department nursery in the city on Wednesday.
Coimbatore: The forest department is getting nearly 15,000 tall seedlings ready for commencing afforestation programme in core city and its peripheral areas. The planting drive is expected to commence within a week and the department has requested those eager to grow trees, especially residential colonies, to approach the forest department. Survival

The programme aims at enhancing green cover drive in urban areas and its peripheral areas by providing flower bearing and shade bearing trees. Stray goats
The department will provide five-foot tall seedlings, since they will ensure a higher rate of survival because they cannot be eaten away by stray goats. Sixteen species such as Pungan, Vembu, Gulmohar, Peltophorum, Mahilam, Golden Bamboo, Naval, Spathodea and other species are being readied at the nurseries at the District Forest Officer’s Bungalow, Conservator’s Bungalow and at a nursery at the Mettuppalayam forest department timber depot. The exercise is expected to commence shortly since there had been adequate number of wet spells because of the South West monsoon. Eleven thousand and twenty nine seedlings have been earmarked for Coimbatore City and 3,676 seedlings will be for residential colonies in the peripheral areas of Coimbatore City. All the 14,705 saplings will be provided with a six feet tall tree guards made of iron. The entire exercise of nurturing the seedlings, pitting, planting and tree guards will cost Rs 340 per sapling for the department, officials said. Concurrence
In Corporation areas, the concurrence of the local body has been obtained and the department is working with the elected representatives i.e., councillors to identify areas where the seedlings could be planted. Contact
These seedlings need to be nurtured by regular watering by either the officials in charge of the area or by the residents living there.
