HYDERABAD: Civil Supplies Minister Kasu Venkata Krishna Reddy said in the Legislative Council on Wednesday that the Government was making all efforts to contain the prices of essential commodities.
Replying to a short debate on price rise, he admitted that there was some increase in the prices.
But, following market intervention by the Government through 100 Rythu Bazars, onions were now being sold at Rs. 7 a kg, tamarind at Rs 30 a kg and red gram at Rs. 31a kg.
The cost of palm oil being supplied in Rythu Bazars was lower than the prevailing market rate by Rs 2. Essential items were also being supplied through mobile vans in important towns.
Cold storage
Mr. Reddy agreed to consider the suggestion of K. Nageshwar for setting up Special Horticultural Zones around major cities as part of long-term measures to control the rising prices of vegetables.
He said he would soon discuss with the Centre the State Government’s proposal to increase cold storage facilities.
He said a special meeting of Collectors, would be convened here under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy to review the price situation.
The Government was trying to release pulses worth Rs.89 crore seized recently by officials.
