Police recover pressure mine

The AP Genco requests the police to check the area for mines and other explosives

VISAKHAPATNAM: The banned CPI (Maoist) blasted an earth-moving equipment and a compressor at the site of a private quarry near Krishnapuram village in Chintapalle mandal at 10 p.m. on Wednesday. However, no casualties were reported.

The white granite quarry has been allotted to a tribal welfare society and is being reportedly run by a non-tribal.

The Sileru police on Wednesday recovered a pressure mine and a switch box buried under an electricity transmission tower near Sapparla village in the agency area.

Red flag

It may be recalled that the banned CPI (Maoist) tried to blast the electric tower during a series of destructions it had carried out last month. The tower suffered only a bend and a civilian was injured. The naxalites put up a red flag at the spot where they planted the mine. Recently, the AP Genco requested the police to check the area for mines and other explosive material, as it wanted to carry out repairs and take up some construction work near the tower.

On Wednesday, the police’s bomb disposal squad was pressed into service to check the vicinity of the tower. It detected the pressure mine along with the switch box.

The pressure mine was detonated at the site.

Two arrested

The police arrested brother and a close relative of CPI (Maoist)’s east division committee member Kudumula Ravi on Monday at Chintapalli for their alleged involvement in the blasting of R and B guest house, a building of electric sub-station, control room of Doordarshan’s relay transmitter and burning of furniture of former MLA P. Balaraju at Chintapalli on July 12. Both were allegedly passing on information to the banned party and helping it in carrying out attacks on the Government property.
