Ankita-Rushmi pair in last four

NEW DELHI: Ankita Bhambri and Rushmi Chakravarthi made the doubles semifinals of the $10,000 ITF women’s circuit tennis tournament at Khonkan, Thailand, with the help of a walkover from Jia Xiang Lu of China and Min-Hwa Yoo of Korea.

Otherwise, it was a forgettable experience for the second string of Indian women players assembled in the tournament as none of them could get past the second round of singles or doubles.

The eighth-seeded Ankita Bhambri lost in the second round of singles to Cho-Won Lee of Korea 1-6, 6-3, 4-6.

Megha Vakaria, Isha Lakhani, Sanaa Bhambri and the second-seeded Rushmi Chakravarthi lost in the first round.

Isha went down fighting 7-6(5), 2-6, 4-6 to Wing-Yau Venise Chan of Hong Kong and the rest could not make an impact.

In doubles, Isha with Nungnadda Wannasuk of Thailand lost 4-6, 6-4, 4-6 to the fourth-seeded Japanese pair of Etsuko Kitazaki and Eriko Mizuno in the quarterfinals. — Special Correspondent
