SBI enters semifinals

CHENNAI: State Bank of India (SBI) entered the semifinals of the 23rd Vittal Trophy football tournament with a solitary goal win over Madras Sporting Union (MSU) on Wednesday.

SAI dictated the terms in the first session and promptly went ahead in the 22nd minute.

Sabeeth did a nice job dodging past an approaching goalkeeper Billa to put the bank team ahead. Joseph was the one who provided the pass.

MSU, which was totally outplayed, pulled itself up in the second. Realising it was in a do-or-die situation, the MSU boys went all out. The flanks and midfield began to put pressure on the SBI defence.

MSU forward Vimal Raj was in the thick of things on more than one occasion. But he couldn’t pierce the net when provided with an opportunity.

SBI, comprising mostly guest players, had its share of chances. The best being the one involving SBI’s Joseph and MSU goalkeeper, Billa.

Midway in the second half, Joseph when confronted with an on-rushing Billa hurried his shot, which went wide off the post. Mention must be made of SBI custodian Sharath, whose clearance was of high standard.
