HYDERABAD: India’s top marksman Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, who would have been the country’s best bet for a medal in the Military World Games, will not be seen in action in the mega event to be held here from October 14 to 21. The double trap event in which Rathore won the silver medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics does not figure in the list of events scheduled in the Games. According to a member of the organising committee, Lt. Gen. Khanna, the ace shooter is, however, expected to be in Hyderabad as he is most likely to be a torch-bearer at the opening ceremony. However, the organisers are not sure why the event does not figure in the schedule. Meanwhile, the general secretary of the Judo Federation of India, Mukesh Kumar, told The Hindu that judo would only serve as an exposure for Indian judokas. “It would be too much to expect any medals,” he said, on a rece nt visit here. “The Federation is, however, working in coordination with the Defence authorities in terms of training a select batch,” he added. With three months to go for the Games, Rathore’s non-participation is unwelcome news for the sports fraternity. Given the fact that 25 per cent of the athletes in the Military Games will be Olympic medallists, it might look strange that Rathore, who happens to be the only medallist from India, will not be there firing for top honours. — Principal Correspondent
