It is the triumph of spirit over adversity. The worst-ever flood in Kozhikode district in more than 15 years saw the people rise to the occasion with a sense of collective will and help those affected by the fury of nature. Country boats and make-shift rafts were pressed into service and people waded through water pulling along rafts to transport people and materials through the flooded water. A person was drowned while he was engaged in rescue activities. Anxious people poured in from far and near to see the trail of destruction wrought by nature. A few of these services were not without financial motive. A few persons who transported vehicles and persons through the waters took money for their services. This also led to a conflict between those who did not charge money and those who did. The mentality of helping fellow beings is something that would be etched in the minds of those affected by the tragedy and others in the years to come. J.S. BABLU
