The ubiquitous helmet

Unlike previously, the Kozhikode city police are strictly enforcing the helmet rule this time. This is evident from the number of two-wheeler riders wearing the headgear.

About 90 per cent of motorists now wear helmets, says City Police Commissioner Balram Kumar Upadhyay.

An average 150 people are penalised daily for not wearing the helmet. Initially, when the rule was implemented in mid-June, the traffic police showed leniency. In the first week, the number of cases stood fewer than 50. “Gradually, we decided to be firm. Now, the traffic police see to it that the rule is enforced. On Wednesday, the number of cases was 204,” Mr. Upadhyay said.

Studies say that a helmet absorbs the impact of a crash during an accident. Research says that the helmet prevents primary injury to the brain in an accident.
