Unrelenting Minister

Cooperation Minister G. Sudhakaran’s candid approach to public issues often results in acute discomfiture for his party colleagues and officials in the department.

Earlier this week, while addressing a district-level seminar organised by the State cooperative union, he spoke about the rampant corruption in the department. CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan who spoke earlier, stressed the need to improve the functioning of cooperative institutions and equip them to face the challenge posed by the forces of globalisation.

“The situation is very bad, worse than one can imagine. Corruption is rampant in cooperative and urban banks and other institutions in the department. Crores of rupees are being lost to graft,” Mr. Sudhakaran said, leaving the other speakers on the dais squirming in their seats. He also proposed sweeping amendments to the law to tackle corruption.
