Thiruvananthapuram
Special correspondent
Thiruvananthapuram: The Telecom and Postal Contractors’ Association has protested against the decision of the Directorate, Department of Posts, New Delhi, to close down the Civil Division Office of the department in Thiruvananthapuram. A press note, quoting association secretary P. Thyagarajan, said the move to wind up the office in the capital city would disturb all the construction works being executed throughout the State. The divisional office, it said, is supervising civil works of the department in all the districts. The division, which came into existence in 1970, has supervised the construction of the buildings of the General Post Office, the Railway Mail Service, the Postmaster-General’s Office as well as various post offices. The association said the decision to close down the office had led to violation of procedural formalities in awarding contract for civil works. “Tender notices are not being published in the media and major civil works are being split up and awarded to inexperienced contractors. Several ongoing works have come to a grinding halt,” it alleged. The association said the office was now functioning with a skeletal staff following the move to wind it up. It urged the authorities to reconsider the decision in view of the need to carry on the works.
