KOCHI: With the Government agencies finding it increasingly difficult to meet the demand for water from residential areas, rainwater harvesting has emerged as a potential alternative. Several non-government organisations have taken the cue and are involved in rainwater harvesting projects. The Kochi-based Welfare Society has set up more than 5,000 rainwater harvesting units in Kerala out of which three-fourths are in Ernakulam district. The society has been engaged in rainwater harvesting projects for more than five years. About 150 units in Thuravur are nearing completion while a project in Chellanam is to be inaugurated after two weeks, according to the society representatives. Many of the projects have been executed in areas like Vypeen The society has been undertaking projects proposed by various panchayats.. Ernakulam Social Service Society, a non-government body, has been executing rainwater harvesting projects under a Canadian-aided project. About 60 projects have been undertaken under the Sustainability through Empowerment and Decentralisation project. The focus has been on remote areas like Pizhala and Moolampally, according to the society. Rajagiri Outreach, another voluntary organisation, has built more than 330 units.
