HELP AT HAND: Youths help people ferry motorbike and passangers through the flooded Kozhikode-Wayanad road at Padanilam, near Kozhikode, on Tuesday with make-shift rafts made of banana trunk.
The KSRTC operates 76 services to Wayanad daily from its Kozhikode depot. But last Tuesday, none of the buses left the depot, leaving Wayanad virtually marooned at 2,000 ft. above sea level. “It is for the first time in my 33 years of service at the KSRTC that not a single bus to Wayanad could be plied,” said K. Moosa, District Transport Officer (DTO), Kozhikode. “Normally, the buses to Wayanad ply either through Thamara ssery or Periya. On Tuesday, the heavy rain damaged both the roads and we had no option but to cancel all the services.” Things improved by Wednesday and bus service was resumed on Thursday. “All the buses are back on the road now,” the DTO said. Life in Wayanad was thrown out of gear. “You don’t do much business when you can’t travel to Kozhikode. So, it was like two days of hartal for us,” said K. Khalid, a buisnessman P.K. AJITH KUMAR
