Calamity management plan worked out for Pudukottai

PUDUKOTTAI: The district administration has drawn up a calamity management plan to be implemented to meet any emergency during the course of the southwest and northeast monsoons.
A Very High Frequency (VHF) wireless equipment will be set up at the Collectorate here on October 1 to receive alert messages on breaches in tanks, reservoirs and other water sources. The Police Department will constitute a special rescue and relief team to execute relief measures, the Collector S. J. Chiru said.
Flood cell formed
Presiding over the calamity co-ordination committee meeting here on Wednesday, Mr. Chiru said that a separate flood cell with a telephone facility (04322-1077) has been set up at the Collectorate. Members of public in need of any assistance could contact the Collectorate.
Officials would be appointed to monitor the flood situation at each and every firka. The Collector directed the fire brigade to keep ready ambulances to rush to the marooned spots and for carrying out relief operations. A list of the names of the divers should also be prepared.
Mr. Chiru directed the Health Department officials to stock adequate medicines at all the government hospitals and to initiate preventive measures against incidence of epidemics and endemics.
The Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, in coordination with the district administration, would ensure adequate supply of essential commodities together with transportation facilities.
The Collector also asked the Public Works Department officials to take up works on proper maintenance of all the 15 Cyclone Relief Centres, including those at Krishnajipattinam, Manamelkudi and Arasanagaripattinam. While a close vigil on the water level in rivers and tanks would be kept by the South Vellar sub-division wing officials, sand bags would be stocked at flood-prone pockets.
