MBBS fresh counselling to begin on August 9

Staff Reporter

BHUBANESWAR: Authorities of the Joint Entrance Examination, Orissa, on Thursday said that fresh counselling for admission into MBBS course in all medical colleges in the State will begin on August 9.

The counselling was abruptly stopped on July 15 when Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Department communicated the State government that MBBS seats in MKCG Medical College, Berhampur, and in VSS Medical College, Burla, had been increased from 107 to 150 on July 14.

This communication, however, could not be implemented since the counselling was already over for a day. “The counselling will resume afresh. The students who have already got admission into several government as well as private colleges will be asked to be present on August 9 and 10,” JEE Vice-Chairman R. R. Das said here.

Parents’ protest

By the time the counselling was stopped, all 364 MBBS course seats in government colleges had been filled and candidates had taken admission in nine seats in private medical colleges.

Several parents did not go for admission after rejecting exorbitant fee fixed by the State government for admission into private medical colleges. Opposing the steep rise in fee, they had even faxed a letter containing signatures of parents and students to the Chief Minister’s Office.

Following the public outcry over very high fee structure, the State government had referred the matter to the fee structure committee for a revision.

The JEE authorities, however, said they would follow the existing fee structure of Rs. 4.5 lakhs per annum into private medical colleges if it was not revised by August 8. There are 750 seats available for MBBS course in three government and equal number of private colleges.

Meanwhile, KIIT University has said that it would take students having JEE ranks. According to a university release, while its 70 seats will be filled through Orissa JEE merit list, another 15 will be allocated for candidates qualifying All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) and 15 would go to non-resident Indian.
