Puducherry: Local Administration Minister Malladi Krishna Rao declared open a housing colony for narikuravas at Lawspet near here on Thursday. The colony has, in the first phase, 17 houses constructed at a cost of Rs 1.3 lakh each. The cost had been shared by the Government and the International Network for Development and Peace (INDP), a voluntary organisation based at Paris. While the Government has provided Rs. 50,000 under Indira Awas Yojana implemented by the District Rural Development Agency, the remaining sum was provided by the INDP. Education Minister M.O.H.F. French Consul General in Puducherry Ms. Joelle Rayet said that it was a good endeavour to rehabilitate the poor through such a collaborative approach. Project Director of the DRDA P. Mathew Samuel said that 31 houses would be constructed at a cost of Rs. 1 lakh each to benefit the narikuravar families in the next phase. PMK Parliamentary Party leader M Ramadoss, Chairman of the Oulgaret Municipal Council N.S.J. Jayabal, councillor N. Periyannan, Project Executive Officer of DRDA S.
