Auto drivers told to install meters

DAVANGERE: The Davangere district administration has directed autorickshaw drivers to install meters in their vehicles by October and charge passengers according to the meter fare from then.

Chairing a road safety meeting here on Wednesday, Deputy Commissioner M.C. Dyberi, who is chairman of the Road Transport Authority, proposed installation of meters in autorickshaws in the wake of complaints of harassment by autorickshaw drivers.

Regional Transport Officer and also secretary of the RTA H.J. Thembad said that autorickshaw drivers opposed installation of meters saying that there were no calibrators in the city.

It was also resolved to set up pre-paid autorickshaw stands at the bus stand and railway station on the lines of those in Bangalore, so that commuters were not be exploited by autorickshaw drivers.

Mr. Dyaberi said that an auto gas filling station was coming up in Davangere and warned autorickshaw drivers against using LPG cylinders in the vehicles. He directed the RTO book cases against drivers or owners of autorickshaws who were operating vehicles on LPG cylinders.

Mr. Thembad said that many private vehicles were ferrying schoolchildren illegally and that many schools did not have buses of their own. Mr. Dyaberi told the RTO to seize such vehicles and cancel their permits. He asked the Deputy Director of Public Instruction to instruct private schools to have their own vehicles.

Speed breakers

The Deputy Commissioner directed the municipal authorities to put up scientific speed breakers on the roads. He directed them to fill pot holes in the city. He directed the RTO and police to initiate action against those who run road rollers and cage wheels on cement roads.

Mr. Dyaberi instructed Deputy Superintendent of Police Murthy to register a case against the transport for threatening RTO staff and police staff. He said that he had received specific complaints from the officials against the transport operator.He asked the KSRTC officials to operate more buses between Davangere and Harihar during peak hours.

The Police department had appealed to the Deputy Commissioner to direct the Davangere City Corporation to take over the maintenance of traffic signals.
