Puducherry-Bangalore highway inconveniences road users

Damaged: The stretch from Sentharapalli to Krishnagiri on the Puducherry-Bangalore highway is battered, causing hardship to road users. —

Krishnagiri: The ordeal of road users travelling on the battered stretches from Krishnagiri to Singarapettai on the Puducherry-Bangalore National Highway continues owing to the slow-paced efforts of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in repairing the numerous potholes.

The road to a length of 60 km suffered extensive damage to its surface during the recent rains.

The Department had filled up the potholes with sand that proved to be of no use to the road-users.

The top portion of the road has completely eroded. Huge craters have emerged at several points and made the road unmotorable.

Traders pointed out that a number of fatalities involving four-wheelers and pedestrians had occurred on the highway over the past two months.

Though repeated representations had been made to the authorities concerned to re-lay the road, the pleas had fallen on deaf ears and no action had been taken so far in order to rectify the situation and make the road safe for those who used it.

This had made motorists to take extra precautions while proceeding on this section. Farmers who are frequently using the road to sell their produce in Thiruvunnamalai are finding it difficult to travel on the road.

Drivers of heavy vehicles complain that it takes more than 30 minutes to reach Thiruvunnamalai and Gingee due to the poor condition of the road.

Sources in the NHAI pointed out that a proposal to take up patchwork had been sent to the Centre for approval. But the Government was yet to sanction funds.
