DEMAND: IUML leaders Dastageer I. Aaga and A.M. Gove submitting a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner in Belgaum on Thursday.
Belgaum: The city and district units of Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) have criticised the “anti-Islam campaign and activities aimed at creating communal disharmony between Muslims and other religious communities.” The IUML condemned the recent incident in Mysore where a few people had burnt religious books at Hazarat Mastan Sahawali Kamaliwale Peer Darga and destroyed graves at the old Qabrastan (grave yard). Both the incidents were serious offences aimed at destroying communal harmony, it said. Submitting a memorandum in this regard to the Governor through the office of the deputy commissioner here on Thursday, IUML city district president Dastageer I. Aaga and Rural District president A.M. Gove said that Karnataka had been a peaceful State where people belonging to different religions lived in harmony. Communal tension had assumed a new dimension wherein the majority communities were victimising the Muslim minority by attacking places of worship and “dargahs.” Such acts were aimed at demoralising and hurting the sentiments of the community, they said. Referring to the Mysore incident, they said that arresting miscreants was not a solution as many would escape punishment for want of evidence/witness. Legislation should be brought out to ensure that those responsible for communal violence were punished prima facie, even if there was no hard evidence/witness. Also, the IUML submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Andhra Pradesh demanding punitive measures against Shanti, a lecturer of St. Annie’s College in Hyderabad, for her “derogatory” remarks against the Prophet Mohammed and the Quran.
