Calicut University Registrar suspended

Staff Reporter

On charges of misconduct and irregularities

MALAPPURAM: Calicut University Syndicate has suspended Registrar P.P. Mohammed on charges of misconduct and irregularities. A meeting of the Syndicate on Thursday served Dr. Mohammed the suspension order pending inquiry.

The meeting decided to give the charge of Registrar to T.K. Narayanan, professor of Sanskrit and director of the Academic Staff College. Joint Registrar K.V. Radhamani, who is in charge of Finance Officer, will hold additional charge of Registrar till Dr. Narayanan takes over.

Dr. Mohammed was charged with failure to implement various decisions of the Syndicate as well as failure to correct irregularities found in recent appointments of teaching faculties.

Another charge was that he had shot off a complaint to the Chancellor bypassing the proper channels and that he had used execrable language against Vice-Chancellor Anwar Jahan Zuberi and some Syndicate members.

The Syndicate also charged Dr. Mohammed with belittling the Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the university, by mentioning in an affidavit the Registrar filed before the High Court that the Chancellor was ignorant of certain rules.

Dr. Mohammed denied the charges. He said it was a political vendetta against him by a CPI(M) syndicate. “The Syndicate has acted in revenge for not playing to its political tunes,” he said, adding that he would consider moving the court against the decision.

Employees owing allegiance to unions backed by the Indian Union Muslim League, Congress and the Communist Party of India (CPI) laid a siege to the administrative block, where the Syndicate met, in protest against the suspension.

The siege ended when the police arrested and removed the employees around 6 p.m. The Syndicate also decided to appoint Student Welfare Dean V. Rajagopal as the next Controller of Examinations. The current Controller, P.K. Sasi, will retire on July 31.

The university will notify again for the post of Finance Officer. Meanwhile, the campus witnessed a mild skirmish between activists of the Muslim Youth League and the Students Federation of India.

The Muslim Youth League men were taking out a demonstration demanding immediate constitution of the Senate and election of the Syndicate.

The Students Federation of India activists were protesting against the Syndicate decision to hike university fee.
