Opportunities knocking: K. Viswanathan, CEO, Wipro Infotech, addressing students of K.S.R. College of Technology in Erode on Thursday.

TIRUCHENGODE: Wipro Infotech is looking at the possibility of entering into tie-ups with colleges to meet employee shortfall, Chief Executive Strategic Sales and Product Geography, Wipro Infotech, K. S. Viswanathan has said here.

Participating at a function organised by K.S.R. College of Technology here on Thursday, he said the company would soon collaborate with colleges so that the latter’s faculty teach its employees, who hold science degrees.

He said Wipro Infotech employed science graduates, who during Fridays and Saturdays studied through the distance learning mode to earn an MS degree, which at present was offered by BITS - Pilani.

In that direction, to enable more such employees earn an engineering degree the company was exploring the possibilities of collaborating with colleges like the K.S.R. College of Technology, whose faculty would teach its employees.

Mr. Viswanathan, however, hastened to add that the plan was only at an “embryonic stage” and still had a long way to go. The plan, if and when materialises, would help the company in more ways than one.

“Firstly it help the company retain talent for a while say, at least till they complete the four-year MS programme; secondly, upon completion of the programme, the talents will turn committed employees for having enabled them to have an engineering degree, something they missed after Plus Two,” he said.

Employing science graduates was important, Mr. Viswanathan said, pointing to the fact that the IT industry alone faced an annual shortfall of over 1 lakh people.

Later addressing students, he said attitude was what mattered. “Hard work may take you far but not farther enough, and luck may fail you when you need it the most. But what will see you through is attitude, and that is what we are looking for in our employees.”

College Principal P.S.S. Srinivasan spoke about the college’s development activities and what it intended to do in the coming years.

Chairman K.S. Rangasamy said he looked forward to having a closer interaction with the software giant.

Secretary Kavithaa Srinivaasan proposed the vote of thanks.
