‘Child labour only perpetuates poverty’

Bangalore: India has failed to meet many of the guidelines on elimination of child labour, some of which date back to the 70s, Sanjiv Kumar, national project coordinator of the International Labour Organisation, has said.

Speaking on “Elimination and rehabilitation of child labour” at an interactive meeting organised by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) here, he cited the Minimum Age Convention (No. 138), passed in 1973. The convention says that the minimum age for employment should be raised progressively “to a level consistent with the fullest physical and mental development of the young person”.

“Child labour in any form will not benefit family, society or the child itself,” he said. It was a pity that even educated and well-placed people in society assumed that giving employment to a child minimised poverty. They failed to understand that it perpetuated the cycle of poverty by denying education to yet another generation, he said.
