Recommendation by MCI surprises students

Bindu Shajan Perappadan

NEW DELHI: With the admission season in full swing and students complaining about the limited number of seats available especially in professional courses, this latest “recommendation” by the Medical Council of India (MCI) has come as an unpleasant surprise for several students across the country.

Following up on its inspection drive last year and subsequent suggestions for improvement, the MCI has recommended de-recognition of several undergraduate and postgraduate medical courses of Kasturba Medical College at Manipal and Mangalore after these well-known medical institutions failed to comply with the changes suggested by the MCI for granting recognition to the courses.

Said a senior MCI official, “We had inspected these colleges last year and had recommended that certain changes be made to ensure that students enrolled in the courses get the best quality education. Despite the recommendations there has not been any improvement and hence the recommendation to de-recognise certain undergraduate and postgraduate courses in both the colleges. The recommendation has been forwarded to the Central Government.”

“The Council,” he added, “was established to introduce and maintain a uniform standard of medical education for both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, make recommendation for recognition/de-recognition of medical qualifications from Indian and foreign medical institutions, provide permanent registration/provisional registration of doctors with recognised medical qualifications and reciprocity with foreign countries in the matter of mutual recognition of medical qualifications. We conduct routine checks and recommend changes where needed.”
