Railway names officer for expediting pending works

Staff Reporter

Coimbatore: The Southern Railway has posted an officer in the rank of a Deputy Chief Engineer (DCE) for expediting the ongoing works in Coimbatore region. The Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, General Secretary, K. Ramakrishnan, has thanked the railway administration for the effort to expedite the long-pending projects.

The ongoing works in this region were till now co-ordinated by DCE, Salem and because of the mounting workload, the Southern Railway decided to post an officer exclusively for expediting the pending projects. The Officer-on-Special Duty appointed for expediting the formation of the Salem Railway Division, Bola Singh, was already on the process of expediting these works. More officials are now assisting him to push these projects forward.

C. Sundar, DCE posted for Coimbatore region, would expedite the conversion of the metre gauge sections into broad gauge on the Coimbatore – Pollachi (45.81 km) and Pollachi – Palakkad sections (57.78 km) besides expediting the two-decade-old Coimbatore – Irugur railway line doubling work. The decision to depute an officer exclusively was to ensure better field level co-ordination, utilisation of funds on time and to maintain the work schedule within the permitted time-frame, railway sources said.

Gauge conversion

The Southern Railway has also posted another DCE at Madurai for expediting the gauge conversion works between Madurai – Dindigul and Pollachi. The removal of this island MG section under the Southern Railway would help in enhancing better rail connectivity with Southern districts for the benefit of the migrant workforce in Western Tamil Nadu. The officials pointed out that there was enough budgetary allocation this year for the preliminary works and more funds would not be a constraint.

Similarly, the posting of DCE would also help in expediting the two bridge works i.e., the one at Hope College across Avanashi Road and on Sathyamangalam Road. These two bridges works besides hitches in acquisition of land in two small pockets were actually holding back the doubling of the 17.7 km railway line between Coimbatore North Junction and Irugur Junction. The project had been allocated Rs. 10 crore during the current fiscal. The doubling of the line was over in a majority of the areas and the small islands left out need to be connected and the authorities were confident of completing the work by mid-2008. The single line bottleneck had delayed the operation of many trains besides resulting in diversion of trains via Irugur and Podanur skipping Coimbatore. The DCE posted at Coimbatore would also expedite the pending rail overbridge (ROB) works at Ukkadam, besides two bridges near Tirupur at Ingur and Uthukuzhi. The authorities said that sanction of a post in the rank of DCE would also help in planning the construction of future ROBs at Somanur, Sulur, Irugur and Nanjundapuram which were in the pipeline.
