Karunanidhi orders free cataract surgeries

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has ordered free cataract surgery for those suffering from cataract-related disorders.

Reviewing the performance of the Health Department, he said glasses should be provided to those who required it.

He stressed the need for making available financial assistance to poor pregnant women at the right time and said that keeping this in mind the Government had sanctioned Rs. 160 crore for the Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Financial Assistance Scheme for pregnant women. Each woman gets Rs. 6,000 split into two instalments.

Mr. Karunanidhi asked the department to expedite work on constructing buildings for 235 hospitals set up under the Tamil Nadu Health Systems project.

He also wanted all projects planned for the year speeded up.

He said building work of medical colleges in Villupuram, Dharmapuri and Tiruvarur should be completed soon and students admitted from academic year 2008-09.
