Legislator defies TDP decision to abstain from voting Suspended TDP MLA, 10 rebel TRS MLAs also cast vote
HYDERABAD: Defying the party’s decision to abstain from polling, senior Telugu Desam Party MLA S.V. Subba Reddy cast his vote in the Presidential election held on Thursday. Much to the discomfiture of the Telugu Desam party leadership, Mr. Subba Reddy defended his action on the ground that the party had not issued any whip against participating in the election and he had only fulfilled his responsibility as a voter in a democratic system. Another TDP MLA G. Veerasiva Reddy, who was suspended from the party, and 10 rebel MLAs of the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) also participated in the voting in violation of the decision of their respective parties. In all, 65 MLAs — 43 from TDP, 16 TRS, five MIM and Gummadi Narsaiah (Independent) — abstained from voting in line with their political stand. Given the value of each vote of MLAs at 148 and MPs at 708, the Congress poll managers said, votes secured by UPA nominee Pratibha Patil from Andhra Pradesh have been valued at 64,748 against the requirement of 5,49,442 to cross the half-way mark. Voting commenced at 10 a.m. with Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy casting the first ballot. It progressed briskly as all the 186 Congress MLAs and three MPs including Kotla Suryaprakasha Reddy, who was to participate in the last rites of his mother, cast their vote. Two other Congress MPs Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy and V. Hanumanth Rao also cast their vote from the State. Polling was almost complete by noon as legislators of Congress, Left parties, TRS rebels, independents and others, barring MIM, cast their vote. Unlike the elections to Legislative Council which saw some MLAs getting confused due to the preferential votes, voting this time was smooth as there were only two contenders — Pratibha Patil and Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.
