dated July 20, 1957: Former French areas

The Foreign Affairs Committee of the French National Assembly on July 18 voted in favour of ratification of the treaty by which France ceded to India her former territories – Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe, Yanam and Chandranagore. It approved by 26 votes against 15 with one abstention a report by a Radical Deputy, M. Paul Devinat, which was in favour of ratification. Before the vote, the Committee heard the Foreign Minister, M. Christian Pineau. The Committee members later said that the Minister had told them that ratification of the treaty would help improve relations between Paris and New Delhi. He also said the advantages of ratifying the treaty outweighed the disadvantages.
