dated July 20, 1957: Plot against Nasser

The Egyptian President, Col. Nasser, announced in Cairo on July 18 that he had foiled an attempt by army officers and civilians, including two former Cabinet Ministers, to overthrow his regime. The attempt was made last April. The conspirators included Dr. Mohammad Salah el Din, former Foreign Minister, and Abdel Fattah Hassan, former Minister of the Interior, the announcement said. A Government statement said the plotters had confessed that they planned to assassinate Col. Nasser and his Ministers during a Cabinet meeting or alternatively to kill the President in a roadside ambush or in his office. They called themselves “the Society of Upholders of Righteousness” and their leader was one Lateef Nassar, the Government said. They had planned to attempt their coup, dressed in military uniforms and armed with machine-guns.
