IMPHAL: The employees of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), a Government of India undertaking, staged a brief sit-in on Thursday in protest against the gun attack on the residence of Elangbam Debendra, its Chief Accounts Officer, on Wednesday. No patient was treated. However, listed surgeries were conducted. The doctors and other staff resumed duty later in the afternoon. RIMS Director Professor L. Fimate told reporters that the doctors and senior officials had been targeted by insurgents. He said that he himself was kidnapped after which he was given armed guards. Professor Yambem Mohen, Medical Superintendent, narrowly escaped a bomb attack last month. He was also given armed guards. Doctors said that militant outfits not only take a cut from their salaries but also demanded huge sums now and then.
