Smith to lead South Africa

Durban: Host South Africa announced a provisional 30-member squad for the inaugural ICC Twenty20 World Cup in September.

Graeme Smith has been named as captain while Jacques Kallis was chosen as vice-captain of the side.

The list which include veterans Shaun Pollock and Mark Boucher will be pruned to 15-members.

“The final 15-man Proteas squad must be submitted to the ICC by August 11, tournament Director Steve Elworthy said on Tuesday.

“The results and individual performances of the various players were taken into account by the selectors and they have put together a competitive and exciting squad that will add to the hype already created around the tournament.

“All 30 provisional squad members have contributed to their teams’ results on the international and domestic fronts.

The championship starts on September 11 and the final will be held on September 24 at the Wanderers in Johannesburg.

Provisional squad: Graeme Smith (capt.), Jacques Kallis, Shaun Pollock, Makhaya Ntini, Hashim Amla, Loots Bosman, Gulam Bodi, Johan Botha, Mark Boucher, AB de Villiers, J.P. Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Andrew Hall, Paul Harris, Justin Kem p, Charl Langeveldt, Neil McKenzie, Albie Morkel, Mornh Morkel, Andre Nel, Justin Ontong, Alviro Petersen, Robin Peterson, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Roger Telemachus, Alfonso Thomas, Thandi Tshabalala, Johan van der Wath and Mornh van Wyk. — PTI
