Monisha Vinayak retains women’s singles title

BANGALORE: The top seed Monisha Vinayak overcame a strong challenge from the second seed Saumya Padhye and retained her women’s singles title in the Narasamma memorial State-ranking badminton championship at Malleswaram Association courts here on Thursday.

The defending champion Monisha , who won 21-8, 24-22, raced through the first game but ran into lot of problems in the second as saumya found enough gaps to pick up some easy winner and took an early lead.

Monisha , however, fought back to level at 15 all and again at 20 all , to push the game into extra points.. A nervous Saumya , after holding till 22-all, made couple of net errors to drop the game and match.

Ajay Patil continued his success story in the boys under-16 singles section. Close on the heels of his victory at Canara Union tournament, Ajay made his second final with a 21-6, 21-16 win over L.U. Chirag in the semifinals. He now meets the seventh seed, Rajas Jawlakar who shocked the second seed Vinay Hari 21-17, 21-9. Ajay is thus in line for a double as he had won the doubles title partnering R.N. Suraj on Wednesday.

Ankita Ashok stopped the under-16 champion Jacqueline Kunnath’s bid for a double when she beat the latter at 21-18, 21-13 in the girls under-19 singles final.

Mithun Manjunath bagged the boys’ under-10 singles title with a 21-13, 21-17 win over Akash Anvekar in the final. M.D. Anup Kiran and Prateek Khuranai won their second successive doubles title in the boys under-19 section, beating G.K. Ashwin and Vinay Hari 23-21, 21-15.

The results: Boys’ Under-10 singles final: Mithun Manjunath bt Akash Anvekar 21-13, 21-17.

Under-16 singles semifinals: Ajay Patil bt L.U. Chirag 21-6, 21-16; Rajas Jawalkar bt Vinay hari 21-17, 21-19. Doubles final: Ajay Patil-R.N. Suraj bt G.K. Ashwin-Vinay Hari 23-21, 21-15.

Men’s doubles semi-finals: Vineet Manuel-Arun Vishnu bt Jagdish Yadav-Venkatesh Prasad 21-8, 21-16; Abhijith Naimpally-D. Guruprasad bt B.S. Phalgun-Sashank Achar 21-14, 21-13.

Girls’ Under-19 singles final: Ankita Ashok bt Jacqueline Kunnath 21-18, 21-13.

Women’s singles final: Monisha Vinayak bt Saumya Padhye 21-18, 24-22 .

Doubles semifinals: Adfa Taqvi-G.M. Anusha bt Kaveri-Sharadha 21-13, 20-22, 21-12; Manju T. George-Manavi Rao bt Pooja Anvekar-Sayali Malgave 21-13, 21-16.

Suraj and Kunal star

Suraj Sampath slammed 180 and Kunal Kapoor scored 119, as Bangalore City declared its first innings at 420 for five against Dharwad Zone in a S.A. Srinivasan memorial under-22 tournament match which commenced here on Thursday.

At close on the opening day, Dharwad Zone mustered 43 for two in 11.1 overs.

The scores: Bangalore City XI 420 for five decl. in 82.4 overs (Suraj Sampath 180, Kunal Kapoor 119, Nishanth Hegde 52 n.o.) vs Dharwad Zone 43 for two in 11.1 overs.

Bangalore Zone 183 in 61.1 overs (S. Prajwal 60) vs Raichur Zone 56 for two in 28 overs.

Shimoga Zone 229 for six in 55 overs (M.K. Sagar 75, C.K. Akshay 52, Balasubramanya 41 n.o.) vs President’s XI.

Combined City XI 332 in 87.5 overs (D.N. Manjunath 106, R. Karan Rao 58, Arjun Gowda 50 n.o., M.K. Girish five for 90).vs Tumkur Zone.

In sight of a double

Sports School, Vidyanagar is in sight of a double as its boys and girls recorded creditable victories in the High schools tournament for the Yashodamma memorial trophy. While its girls team outplayed St. Mary’s 25-18, 25-12 with Arpitha playing a lead role, the Vidyanagar boys team survived some anxious moments in the second set against A.V. Education (J.P. Nagar) before winning 25-12, 26-24.

While the SS Vidyanagar boys will take on Shantiniketan in the final league match, the match between SS Vidyanagar and Carmel Convent will decide the champions in the girls section.

The results: Super League: Boys: Shantiniketan (BTM) bt A.V. Education 25-8, 25-3; SSV bt AV Education 25-20, 26-24; SSV bt Gandhi Vidyashala 25-6, 25-15; Shantiniketan (BTM) w/o Gandhi Vidyashala.
