NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government’s Power Department has given its approval to a proposal of North Delhi Power Limited to set up a 100 MW power plant in the Capital. The Department has asked the Delhi Development Authority to process the power distribution company’s application seeking permission for change of land use for setting up the gas-based plant in Rohini. “The discom has shown interest in setting up a plant. So we have forwarded its proposal to the DDA for their permission to allow the change of land use. We have also written to the Delhi Jal Board to provide the discom sewage water for cooling the plant,” said Rakesh Mehta, Principal Secretary (Power). The 100 MW gas-based plant is aimed at cutting down on power procurement costs. “The idea behind setting up the plant is to save on power procurement during peak hours. We have already written to the Power Department and the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission seeking permission to set up the plant in our area of operation,” said an NDPL official. “Once the DDA’s and the environment clearance comes through, the plant will be constructed in about a year’s time,” the official added. The discom has tied up with Reliance for procuring gas for the plant. The discoms in the Capital have begun to procure power for their areas through a power procurement group established by the Delhi Government. While the PPG’s term is limited to 2010, the discoms have been asked to meet their own demands by 2012.
