One MLA abstains from voting
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: All Delhi MLAs barring Dayanand Chandela of the Bharatiya Janata Party cast their votes for the Presidential election at Old Secretariat here on Thursday.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit was among the first to cast her vote, reaching the polling station around 10 a.m.
Three MLAs – Delhi Nationalist Congress Party president Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, Shoaib Iqbal of Janata Dal (Secular) and independent Ranbir Singh Kharab -- reportedly voted in favour of the Congress candidate Pratibha Patil.
It is learnt that Mr. Kharab, who was initially in favour of voting for Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, changed his mind and voted for Ms. Patil as no one from the BJP showed any interest in persuading him to come along.
Every Delhi MLA has a weightage of 58 votes in the Presidential election.
