VISAKHAPATNAM: The government’s plan to privatise pension fund was strongly opposed by representatives of several State and Central government employees, teachers and workers at a ‘maha dharna’ held in front of the Collectorate here on Thursday.

The protest programme was organised by the Struggle Committee of Central, State and Public Sector Employees, Teachers and Workers as part of a State-wide programme in response to a call given by the All-India State Government Employees’ Federation and the AP NGOs’ Association State Committee. President of district unit of APNGOs Association and chairman of JAC T. Govardhana Rao presided.

The committee urged the Central government to immediately withdraw the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority bill introduced in Parliament in spite of strong opposition from government employees and Left parties.

AITUC national leader V.V. Rama Rao and CITU leader Rajeswara Rao criticised the Congress-led UPA Government for sidestepping the CMP and taking many steps that were anti-people and anti-employee. State vice-president of APNGOs Association K. Raja Rao inaugurated the dharna. President and secretary of city unit K. Eswara Rao and M. Madhusudhana Rao, and others spoke.
