Quota category doctors continue hunger strike

‘Discrimination in appointment of senior residents at AIIMS’

Institute Director should meet us, demand doctors

No rules being flouted: senior faculty member

NEW DELHI: Doctors belonging to the reserved category at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) here continued their relay hunger strike on Thursday protesting against alleged discrimination in the appointment of senior residents at the Institute.

The protesters are demanding that the Institute Director meet the doctors belonging to the reserved category and that all candidates who have qualified after the written tests be given their posts as per their marks.

Said Kapil Yadav of AIIMS: “We want to meet the Director and explain our position to him. We feel that we have been discriminated against. We will continue the agitation till we get justice.”

Refuting claims of discrimination, Resident Doctors’ Association president Kumar Harsh said: “The selection process has not excluded any doctor from the reserved category.

It has been a clean and transparent process. In fact, there are several general category doctors too who haven’t cleared the selection process. Also, earlier this week doctors belonging to the reserved category had written to the Institute Director informing him that they had no problem with the selection process and it was only after that temporary appointment letters were issued.”

Asserting that no rules were being flouted in the selection process, a senior faculty member said: “Everything has been done as per rules and there has been no effort to sideline any particular category of doctors. The doctors on strike are tarnishing the image of the Institute and its Director.”
