More schools to have ‘green corps’

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The activities of ‘national green corps,’ an environment movement by students will be extended to 1,400 more schools from this academic year, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has said.

He was speaking after the State-level inauguration of eco-clubs organised by the Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment at the Government Higher Secondary School, Punnamood, near Pallichal on Thursday. Now, over 2,000 schools have these clubs, which are aimed at creating awareness among children about nature conservation. State has set apart Rs. 1crore for activities of ‘green corps’, the Chief Minister said. The assistance for each school has been raised from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,500 from this year, he said.

Mr. Achuthanandan said that students should be made aware of the significance of Western Ghats so that its rich bio-diversity can be protected. By extending the activities of ‘green corps’ to more schools the public would be made conscious of the need for nature conservation.

The Chief Minister also pointed out that the State, which boasted of high standards in hygiene and health, was today in the grip of diseases like chikungunya, dengue and rat fever. “This is due to the unscientific methods adopted for disposing waste,” he said. Children can play a role in educating the society, he added.
