Bereaved parents blame college

Staff Reporter

Teams conduct search for some 10 hours in the Krishna

VIJAYAWADA: Parents and relatives of the five students drowned in the Krishna on Wednesday waited anxiously at Seetammavari Paadalu Ghat since Thursday morning hoping against hope that the boys might be alive.

The Krishnalanka police, with the help of swimmers and fishermen, carried on the search in the river through the night and the morning of Thursday until the bodies of four of the five missing students were found. It took about 10 hours for the search teams to spot and recover the bodies, which were stuck deep in the sandy stretches of the river. The bodies were sent to the Government General Hospital for postmortem.

“I did not know about the tragedy till this morning. Though I too ventured into the river, I spent only a few minutes and returned home,” said Ahmed, a student of Junior Intermediate in Gautham Junior College on Mahatma Gandhi Road, where the victims were also studying.

The parents held the college management responsible for the mishap. “They are keen on collecting fee but did not bother about the security of students. Why couldn’t they send an escort to the bus station when they allowed 35 students to go and collect bus passes?” asked Ch. Ramakrishna Prasad, a relative.
