To sport a new look: The land earmarked for building a residential quarters for the court employees. —

MADURAI: A long pending demand of the staff of Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court will soon be fulfilled as preparations are under way to lay the foundation stone for a residential quarters near Maattuthavani Integrated Bus Terminus here.

The Chief Justice, Ajit Prakash Shah, is expected to preside over the ‘bhoomi puja’ (foundation stone laying ceremony) scheduled for July 25. The ceremony will be preceded by the Bench’s third anniversary celebrations on July 24.

According to sources, the Government has allotted 3.67 acres of land adjacent to Reporters’ Colony. The ‘enter upon permission’ was granted to the High Court officials last month. The Tamil Nadu Housing Board has been entrusted with the construction work. The layout of the houses will be commensurate with other TNHB constructions.

The officials have planned to build 16 ‘A’ type houses, 48 ‘B’ type, 112 ‘C’ type and 96 ‘D’ type houses. The court staff will be accommodated as per their cadre. Each of the blocks will have a ground plus three floors not exceeding a height of 15 metres. Besides, the building plan includes a playground, a park and other facilities. The Bench Registry wants the quarters too to be a green zone on the lines of the court premises where some 7,000 saplings had been planted in the last three years.

Though the TNHB is confident of constructing the buildings within 15 to 16 months, the court officials are prevailing upon them to complete the works before July 24 next year. This is the first quarters being built exclusively for the High Court staff. Even those working in the principal seat in Chennai are accommodated only in regular TNHB quarters along with other Government staff depending upon the availability of houses.

At present, there are more than 500 employees working in the Bench. Of them, nearly 150 are on deputation for a year. While some of them have managed to get accommodation in the TNHB quarters at RDO Colony, Chinna Chokkikulam and other places, others are residing in rented houses. Women employees are mostly staying in hostels.

Despite all odds, the Registry has been keeping the staff in good humour by involving them in various activities. Free health check-up camps and yoga camps have been conducted as part of personnel management. The employees are also encouraged to donate blood during special camps.
