Jayalakshmi survives second suicide attempt

Staff Reporter

Mystery shrouds the manner in which the police were informed of the incident

BANGALORE: Nurse B.V. Jayalakshmi, who recently accused BJP MLA M.P. Renukacharya of threatening to kill her, attempted suicide for the second time by consuming barbiturates at her flat in Yeshwanthapur in the early hours of Thursday.

The circumstances under which she attempted suicide and the manner in which the incident came to light have created room for various interpretations.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Syed Ulfath Hussein, around 1.30 a.m. the police control room (100) received an anonymous call that Ms. Jayalakshmi had attempted suicide at her flat in Platinum City apartments in Yeshwanthapur.

When the police rushed to Ms. Jayalakshmi’s flat, a person by name Somashekara Gowda opened the door.

Mr. Gowda claimed that he came to the flat a few minutes ago after journalist Balakrishna Kakathkar informed him about the nurse’s suicide attempt and asked him to go there, Mr. Hussein told The Hindu.

The police, with Mr. Gowda’s assistance, rushed Ms. Jayalakshmi to M.S. Ramaiah Hospital around 2.30 a.m. Doctors gave her a stomach wash immediately. Although she is in the intensive care unit, she was out of danger, the officer said.

Mr. Hussein said the police found a strip of barbiturates tablets (normally used for epilepsy treatment) close to Ms. Jayalakshmi’s bed and 12 tablets had been taken out from the strip.

sEnquiries by the police revealed that a few people had come to Ms. Jayalakshmi’s house in two cars before she attempted suicide.

“Once she is discharged from the hospital, we will question her and ascertain who had visited her,” he said. The Yeshwanthapur police have registered an attempt to suicide case against Ms. Jayalakshmi.

Meanwhile, rumours were rife that some politicians had made Ms. Jayalakshmi to “enact suicide drama” so that the matter could be raised in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
